Fire retardant paints and primers are used extensively in the construction industry to give give hourly fire ratings to construction materials like steel, polyurethane foam insulation, drywall and wood (plywood, OSB, wooden trusses, etc.). Whereas saturants like BanFire soak into the wood and bond with the fibers, paints sit on the surface and protect the substrate by intumescing, or bubbling up into a foam when exposed to extreme heat. This foam creates a layer of char, which insulates and protects the surface.
Most fire retardant paints are intumescents, although some are not. They can replace the thick, fibrous coatings used in the past called cementitious, seen frequently on the steel trusses of older buildings and warehouses. The paints are much easier to work with, thinner, with easier clean-up because they are water-based latex. You can create an hourly rating from 15 minute ignition barriers to 2 hour thermal barriers. It all depends on the thickness of the application.
Intumescent paints can be brushed on, rolled on or sprayed on with standard commercial airless equipment, but most often commercial sprayers are used with larger tips. Each application and code is a little different, so feel free to call us with details of your project so we know what will be the proper product, thickness and application so you will pass inspection.
Contego PFB is a full-bodied latex, single component coating designed to protect a wide range of building materials including structural steel, aluminum, dimensional lumber, manufactured wood products, trusses, drywall, spray polyurethane foam insulation, HDPE wall panels, concrete, plaster, solid core doors and more. The product may also be used for conduit, decking and cladding. Contego UL rated and is approved to give hourly ratings on construction projects.
FIRESHELL® (F10E) is a non-flammable, intumescing (expands up to 2000%) interior coating that provides oxygen starvation to fire. It is a non-toxic, water based, drain safe, no fuming GREEN product. FIRESHELL® passes full scale room corner over foam NFPA 286 and E84 class A certified. It is a waterbased one part coating system that comes white but can be tinted different colors. This coating can be latex or oil based topcoated.
BanFire flame retardant paint is a lower-cost alternative for fire safety. Class A rated for ASTM E84 for construction materials, it is a great solution for commercial and residential interior surfaces like paneling, non-porous substrates, veneer, gypsum board, wood, plastic, previously coated surfaces, and MDF, to name a few.
FS3 Paint Additive is one of the most unique fire retardants available on the market today! Just one application of FS3 Paint Additive will provide a Class A fire rating. Just add one pint (as it comes in the container) per 1 gallon of paint.
ASTM E-84, NFPA 255, and UL 723
Achieves a “15 Minute Alternative to Thermal Barrier,” and “Ignition Barrier.” DC315 is compliant to IBC & IRC codes; 3rd party inspected and listed by Warnock Hersey (WN-20947) and meets the requirements of the AC456 criteria recently updated in AC377. DC315 has more than 200 tests worldwide over a wide variety of foams.
